At Douglas OHI, the health, safety, sustainability, and environmental (HSSE) well-being of our team members is at the heart of our operations. We recently launched a HSSE awareness campaign specifically for the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) team at our project site in Muscat, Oman. This initiative aims to enhance safety practices, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Here’s a look at the key components and objectives of this impactful campaign.
Our campaign’s primary objectives were to increase awareness, ensure compliance with local and international HSSE regulations, minimise incidents through safe work practices, prepare staff for emergencies, and promote ongoing improvement in HSSE practices. These goals are essential for creating a safer, healthier and more efficient work environment.
The programme began with an introduction to our HSSE policy, emphasising its importance and outlining the programmes objectives. We covered local and international health and safety regulations, specifically those related to MEP activities, and highlighted the consequences of non-compliance. This foundational knowledge is vital for understanding the regulatory landscape.
We focused on hazard identification and risk assessment by training our team on methods to identify hazards in MEP work, conduct thorough risk assessments, and implement control measures. Safe work practices were also a major focus, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of tools and machinery, protocols for working at heights and in confined spaces, electrical safety, and ergonomics.
Emergency response and preparedness training included fire safety, evacuation procedures, first aid, incident reporting, and spill response. We also covered site security protocols, personal security measures, and handling suspicious activities to ensure comprehensive security awareness.
Environmental protection training encompassed included waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainable practices. Communication and reporting were emphasised through clear channels for reporting unsafe conditions and near misses, with regular HSSE meetings and briefings to keep everyone informed and engaged.
Engagement and participation from the MEP team were critical to the programme’s success. Interactive training sessions allowed employees to practice safe work practices and emergency response. We encouraged continuous learning through refresher courses and advanced HSSE training programmes and organised collaborative safety drills to ensure preparedness.
The HSSE awareness campaign for the MEP team in Muscat represents a significant step in promoting a safer and more compliant work environment. By focusing on health, safety, security, and environmental protection and actively engaging our team members, Douglas OHI reaffirms its commitment to excellence.
