World Soil Day: Nurturing sustainability through everyday action

As the world marks World Soil Day, we are reminded that protecting the planet’s natural resources begins with the choices we make every day. Soil health is central to food security, biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development. For the construction industry, it is also a vital part of responsible land use and long-term environmental stewardship.

At Douglas OHI, we continue to embed sustainability into our operations across all regions, guided by global best practice and our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While large-scale initiatives drive measurable progress, the small, consistent actions taken by our people often demonstrate the most meaningful impact.

One such example comes from Gokul Prasad, Environmental Coordinator in KSA, who has created a simple but powerful sustainability initiative at our project site. By cultivating tomato and brinjal plants in a dedicated green corner, Gokul has demonstrated how thoughtful use of space can bring nature closer to the work environment. His recent harvest of fresh produce reflects both care and commitment to creating a healthier, more balanced workspace.

In addition, Gokul has repurposed leftover wood from the site to craft a nest structure that supports local wildlife. This act of reuse not only reduces waste but also enhances the natural ecosystem surrounding the project area. It is a strong example of how circular thinking can be applied at site level, turning surplus materials into purposeful outcomes.

These efforts illustrate that sustainability is not solely defined by major programmes or large investments. It is equally shaped by our people, whose dedication helps transform everyday practices into long-term environmental value.

As we recognise World Soil Day, we celebrate colleagues like Gokul who demonstrate leadership by example. Their initiatives reinforce our belief that responsible construction begins with respect for the environment and a shared commitment to leaving a positive legacy for the communities in which we operate.

Douglas OHI remains steadfast in advancing practices that protect natural resources, promote environmental awareness, and contribute to a more sustainable future - one initiative, one site, and one action at a time.
