Why hand safety is everyone’s responsibility

Hands are essential to the work our people do every day and are also highly vulnerable. At Douglas OHI, preventing hand injuries goes beyond compliance; it is about leadership, awareness and a culture where safety is owned by everyone on site.

Recently, our Muscat-based project team delivered a Hand Injury Awareness Session designed to reinforce safe working practices and address one of the most common workplace injuries in construction. The session focused on behavioural awareness, risk anticipation and practical decision-making in real working conditions.

Hand injuries often happen during routine tasks such as lifting, cutting or handling tools and materials, when familiarity leads to complacency, sometimes time pressures, or distraction encourage risk taking. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, operatives learned to reassess everyday activities, identify and avoid pinch points and understand how small lapses can have serious consequences. Correct selection and use of hand protection, as well as proper maintenance of tools and equipment, were emphasised.

What made the session particularly impactful was its focus on shared responsibility. Supervisors and team leaders reinforced that safety is not just a checklist; it is leadership behaviour demonstrated daily through planning, supervision and intervention. By fostering an environment for open dialogue, the team was able to share experiences, near misses and lessons learned, turning individual insights into collective knowledge.

At Douglas OHI, we believe meaningful safety training empowers people rather than simply instructing them. Focused sessions such as hand injury prevention help build a workforce that is alert, informed and confident to act when something does not feel right.

By embedding proactive thinking and personal accountability into daily operations, we not only reduce injuries, but we also strengthen trust, protect livelihoods and uphold our commitment to sending every person home safe every day
