At Douglas OHI, health, safety, sustainability, and environmental (HSSE) excellence remain at the core of our operations. A recent HSSE observation exercise at one of our project sites in Muscat reaffirmed our commitment to proactively identifying hazards, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and fostering a culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility.
The Importance of PPE in the Workplace
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) serves as the first line of defence against workplace hazards. The observations highlighted instances of proper PPE use, reinforcing its role in mitigating risks. However, some cases required intervention to ensure full compliance with company standards. Workers were reminded of the necessity of wearing helmets, gloves, safety goggles, and protective footwear at all times to prevent injuries.
Supervisor Responsibility and Safety Leadership
Supervisors play a critical role in enforcing safety protocols and leading by example. The observation exercise emphasised the importance of active supervision, ensuring workers adhere to safe practices. Supervisors were encouraged to conduct regular toolbox talks, monitor compliance, and address any unsafe behaviours promptly.
Hazard Identification and Control Measures
A key focus of the exercise was the identification of potential hazards and implementing appropriate control measures. Observers noted risks related to working at height, material handling, and electrical safety. Immediate corrective actions were taken, including improved signage, reinforced barricading, and ensuring proper lifting techniques were followed.
Emergency Procedures Awareness
Understanding and practising emergency procedures s vital to minimising risks in case of incidents. The site team reviewed evacuation routes, emergency assembly points, and fire response protocols. This reinforced the importance of preparedness and swift action during emergencies.
Material and Cable Management
Proper material storage and cable management are crucial for maintaining a safe and organised worksite. Observations highlighted areas where cables were improperly routed, posing trip hazards. Immediate rectifications were made, ensuring that materials and electrical wiring were securely managed to prevent potential accidents.
Ramadan Safety Measures
With Ramadan observed at the site, additional safety measures were reinforced. Fatigue management was a key discussion point, ensuring workers took adequate breaks, stayed hydrated, and adjusted workloads accordingly. Site teams were reminded to remain vigilant and report any signs of exhaustion or dizziness to supervisors immediately.
A Continued Commitment to Safety
The HSSE observation exercise at Douglas OHI’s Muscat project site was a valuable opportunity to strengthen our safety culture. Through proactive hazard identification, supervisory accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement, we ensure that every worker operates in a secure and controlled environment.
Safety is a collective responsibility, and by embedding these best practices into daily operations, Douglas OHI continues to set industry benchmarks for workplace safety and operational excellence.
