As Oman prepares to observe Oman Tree Day on 31 October 2026, protecting our natural environment and embedding sustainability into everyday practices takes on renewed significance.
At Douglas OHI, environmental responsibility is an important part of how we approach our work, engage our people and contribute to the communities in which we operate. As reflected in our 2026 Impact Report, meaningful progress comes from translating our commitments into practical action across our projects and workplaces.
As part of a building refurbishment project, Douglas OHI recently brought project personnel together for an environmental engagement session, highlighting how thoughtful landscaping and everyday actions can contribute to greener workplaces and a more sustainable future.
Creating greener workplaces
As part of the new building landscaping package, the project site now includes a variety of shrubs and ornamental plants. Beyond enhancing the appearance of the surroundings, these green spaces provide an opportunity to consider how thoughtful landscaping can contribute to a more welcoming workplace and support wider environmental objectives.
Green spaces require more than initial investment. Their long-term value depends on how they are maintained, protected and incorporated into the everyday life of a workplace. Environmental awareness among employees is therefore important in helping ensure that landscaping remains a lasting and valued feature of the site.
From awareness to action
Held under the theme Growing Together for a Sustainable Oman, the engagement session highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility.
It also reinforced a simple but important message: Small Actions, Lasting Change.
Whether through caring for planted areas, using resources responsibly or keeping the workplace clean, individual actions can help establish more environmentally conscious habits. When these actions become part of everyday working practices, they contribute to a shared culture of responsibility.
This approach reflects the wider sustainability themes set out in Douglas OHI’s 2025 Impact Report, particularly our commitment to taking action on climate and the environment. By encouraging our people to take ownership of their surroundings, we can help turn environmental awareness into practical, everyday behaviours.
Contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a global framework for sustainable development.
In particular, the activity supports the principles of:
• SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by highlighting the value of greener, more welcoming built environments.
• SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by encouraging responsible workplace practices and greater environmental awareness.
• SDG 15: Life on Land, by promoting the importance of vegetation and the care and maintenance of planted areas.
While a single landscaping initiative represents one small contribution, it provides a practical opportunity to engage employees with the broader environmental challenges these goals address. Meaningful progress depends on sustained effort, informed choices and shared responsibility.
Building a more sustainable future
Oman Tree Day offers a timely reminder that sustainability is shaped not only by what we plant today, but also by the care and commitment we demonstrate over time.
For Douglas OHI, environmental engagement initiatives across our projects demonstrate the importance of translating our sustainability commitments into practical action. By connecting the themes of our 2025 Impact Report with everyday activities, we can continue to encourage environmental responsibility and strengthen engagement among our people.
We thank everyone who participated in the initiative and contributed to its success.
Through continued awareness, collective effort and everyday action, we can play our part in supporting a greener Oman and a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Growing Together for a Sustainable Oman. Small Actions, Lasting Change.
