Embedding safety in action: Mass Toolbox Talk in KSA

In high-risk construction environments, safety performance is not defined by procedures alone, but by shared understanding, active participation, and consistent behavioural reinforcement on site. A recent Mass Toolbox Talk held in KSA demonstrated how structured, face-to-face engagement can further strengthen safety culture across all levels of the workforce.

The session brought together site teams for a focused discussion on key safety topics, beginning with heat stress prevention. Led by the Douglas OHI Medic, practical guidance was provided on recognising early symptoms of heat-related illness, maintaining hydration discipline, and adopting appropriate work-rest cycles in line with prevailing site conditions. Given the region’s climate, this remains a critical risk that requires continuous awareness and individual accountability.

The session also addressed personal hygiene, sanitation, and biohazards, with particular emphasis on the presence and associated risks of reptiles within work areas. Workers were reminded of the importance of maintaining clean, controlled environments and promptly reporting potential hazards to reduce exposure risks.

A targeted campaign on hand and power tools reinforced the importance of correct tool usage, inspection routines, and strict adherence to safe operating procedures. This remains a key focus area in preventing avoidable incidents on active construction sites.

Weekly Safety Observations were also discussed as a key mechanism for reinforcing proactive hazard identification and continuous improvement. These observations help ensure that risks are identified early and addressed systematically rather than reactively.

An open forum concluded the session, encouraging workers to share feedback, observations, and suggestions. This dialogue continues to play a vital role in strengthening trust, improving communication, and ensuring that safety practices remain practical and grounded in day-to-day site realities.

All participating workers were reminded of their responsibility in maintaining a safe, compliant, and disciplined work environment. Safety is not a standalone function; it is a collective commitment embedded in every task, decision, and interaction on site.

Thank you to all who participated and contributed. Continued engagement of this nature reinforces a culture where safety is actively lived, not simply communicated.
