Douglas OHI recently conducted focused Chemical Handling, Spill Prevention, and Emergency Preparedness training at one of its Muscat project sites, reinforcing strict control measures around hazardous materials management.
The objective was clear. Prevent incidents. Protect people. Safeguard the environment.
Construction environments often require the use of fuels, solvents, coatings, and other controlled substances. Improper storage, handling, or disposal can lead to environmental harm, health risks, and operational disruption. This targeted training initiative was designed to strengthen awareness, clarify responsibilities, and ensure full compliance with established procedures.
A strong emphasis was placed on spill prevention planning. Teams were briefed on inspection routines, bund integrity checks, and the correct positioning of spill kits in high-risk areas. Practical demonstrations reinforced immediate response actions, including containment, isolation, reporting protocols, and escalation procedures.
Emergency preparedness scenarios formed a key part of the training. Participants worked through simulated spill response exercises to test coordination, communication, and decision-making under pressure. The importance of rapid reporting and a clear command structure during an incident was reinforced throughout.
The training also highlighted environmental stewardship and the responsibility of every individual to prevent contamination of soil, drainage systems, and surrounding areas.
